Upper and lower turrets used on an advanced, multi-tasking, mill-turn centre at MACH 2008 allow balanced cutting to reduce cycle times in 'one-hit' machining
Yamazaki Mazak UK will be showing the Integrex 200-IV ST multi-tasking machine tool with incomparable machining versatility at the UK's MACH 2008 machine tool exhibition. The machine is equipped with upper and lower turrets that allow balanced cutting to reduce cycle times. To further enhance productivity the second spindle is of identical specification to the main spindle at 5000 rev/min and 22kW (30HP) rating

German CNC lathe builder has redesigned its mill-turn centres that are over twice as rigid as earlier models, allowing an increased depth of cut to be taken to maximise metal removal rate
Index Werke, Germany, said that the higher the resonant frequency (RF) of a machine tool's structure, the greater is its inherent stiffness and the more difficult it is for machining forces to induce vibration. Consequently, the company has redesigned its patented SpeedLine C-type mill-turning centres to increase their RF above that of all other lathes on the market, including existing models in its own range.

UK subcontactor has invested over GBP 8 million in advanced machining over the last three years including five-sides, 5-axis milling and multi-axis mill/turn centres
The latest example of the commitment and future thinking of Burdon Engineering's managing director, Barry Hindson, is reflected in the installation of a Deckel Maho DMU 200FD 5-axis universal milling centre at its Stokesley facility just outside Middlesborough, UK. This 44kW swivelling head milling centre has axis travels of 1.8m by 2m by 1.1m.

Machine tool supplier's applications engineers helped a subcontractor reduce aerospace component cycle times and tooling costs by identifying improvements to the cutting cycles
Having been used to 3- and 4-axis machining, Scottish subcontractor, Qualtronic had to move into 5-axis machining. It had the machining centre and rotary/tilt table to do so, but had had littl experience. The original machine tool supplier, Matsuura Machinery, sent in its application engineers to assist.

Travelling column vertical machining centre brings a subcontractor shorter cycle times and ensure high accuracy positioning over extended periods of operation
A Yamazaki Mazak 18.5kW/12,000 rev/min Mazak VTC 200C-II vertical machining centre (VMC) has been added by Flexible Machining Systems, a UK subcontractor working in a variety of precision engineering industries. This travelling column VMC has a 2000mm x 510mm fixed table and is said to be ideally suited to the machining of large, long workpieces.

Latest high speed vertical machining centre used by an aerospace subcontract machining firm is maintaining 5 micron accuracy in the complex machining of Inconel components
The first UK installation of the latest high speed Fanuc F-Series vertical machining centres (VMC) with 24,000 rev/min spindle, 54m/min rapid traverse rates and 1.6s chip-to-chip toolchange has gone directly into production of Airbus and Boeing aerospace components at Protocon Engineering. The T21iF machine joins three existing Fanuc machining centres and a Fanuc wire EDM - also supplied by 600 Centre of Shepshed near Loughborough - that will significantly help to satisfy a rapidly rising order book at the 18-employee Southend-on-Sea (Essex) specialist sub-contract machinist.

Horizontal machining centres with a capacious working envelope have a compact footprint, giving greater productivity/m floor space and highly efficient swarf evacuation
Heller Machine Tools is to launch a range of UK manufactured horizontal machining centres (HMC) at the UK's MACH 2008 machine tool exhibition. Described as newly developed machine concept, the H series assures availability for production, higher cutting performance, increased reliability and easy maintenance to provide economic efficiency and productivity whatever the machining requirement.

At one time, tooling development tended to be a year or so ahead of machine tool development, lately the trend went the other way, though toolmakers are now more than catching up, writes Mike Page
At one time, say 20 years ago, the tooling company produced new, tougher, longer-life tools and users had either to improve existing machine tools to make most use of them or wait for a machine tool builder to develop a machine that would use the tools effectively and at an affordable price.

It is now possible to buy a six-spindle CNC automatic lathe for around twice the cost of a 'high-end' CNC sliding-head automatic lathe for machining parts up to 22mm diameter
CNC multi-spindle automatic lathes have been regarded by many machine shops as too expensive. Now, Index in Germany said that the cost of such machines is constantly reducing. It is now possible to buy a six-spindle CNC automatic (multi) for around twice the cost of a high-end sliding-head lathe, said Richard Kingsbury, managing director of the UK agent for Index turning machines, Geo Kingsbury Machine Tools.
