Versatile VMCs for fast and accurate productivity

08.03.2008

MACH 2008 sees the first UK showing for the new Chiron 12K Series of three, four and five-axis vertical machining centres

The range features a heavy polymer concrete cast structure that makes the machines extremely rigid, stable and accurate, even at high metal removal rates. Rapid traverse speeds of up to 90 metres per minute and accelerations up to 2g are combined with a 15,000 rev/min spindle as standard, while the standard 48-station magazine tool changer gives a tool change time of 0.9 seconds and a chip-to-chip time of just 1.9 seconds.

Optional spindle speeds up to 40,000 rev/min and extended tool magazines are available across the whole 12K Series.

The result is a range of machines that outperform the market and cut cycle times to the minimum.

The same compact machine design provides a single platform with the same dynamic capability for a complete range of three, four and five-axis single-spindle FZ machines and a twin-spindle DZ version for extremely high-productivity applications.

Typical application areas for the 12K Series include components such as steering boxes, air conditioning compressors, pumps and suspension parts as well as medical components, hydraulic manifolds, valve bodies and machined die castings.

The twin-spindle DZ 12K is primarily aimed at high-volume applications, typically in the automotive sector, where two spindles give double the productivity.

The wide range of options available across the range means that the optimum solution can be offered for almost any component up to 550mm (X) by 320mm (Y) by 360mm (Z).

Because of Chiron's travelling column configuration, the highest levels of accuracy can be achieved regardless of the size or weight of the workpiece.

And because there is no moving table, the machines can be supplied with an integrated workpiece changer for in-cycle loading and unloading.

The Chiron FZ 12K S five-axis vertical machining centre is ideally suited to lower volume, high-flexibility manufacturing environments, such as the aerospace industry.

It features three-axis spindle movement and an integrated two-axis swivel rotary table giving a compact design for the maximum productivity per unit area.

The table can be fitted with twin NC rotary axes to allow two-up production for the complete machining of complex workpieces in a single setup.

As an option, the C-axis can be supplied fitted with a torque motor that can rotate at 1000 rev/min for vertical turning operations on parts up to 400mm in diameter.

This would typically come into play where a component had a tight tolerance bore machined in a casting or forging which then provides the datum for other features.

The 12K Linear Speed single and twin-spindle versions have linear motor drives in the X and Y-axes giving rapid traverses up to 90m/min and are fitted with integral water cooling so that all heat sources are isolated from the machine structure.
