Machine tool orders hit their highest level in four years, according to The American Machine Tool Distributors' Association (AMTDA), Rockville, Md., and AMT -- The Association For Manufacturing Technology, McLean, Va., in their monthly United States Machine Tool Consumption report (USMTC). September machine tool consumption totaled $389.20 million, 89.8% higher than August's $225.52 million. "Manufacturing in the U.S. continues to show signs of a strong comeback," reports AMTDA president Ralph J. Nappi. September's total was also 74.6% higher than the total reported for September 2003. To date, 2004 is 42.2% higher than 2003 with a total of $2,146.95 million. The Midwest and Northeast regions led with the most orders, 156.5% and 102.3%, respectively. Jointly compiled by AMT and AMTDA, the United States Machine Tool Consumption report is based on totals of data reported by companies participating in the program.
